Cravings Are Clues: Looking Beyond the Snack
Cravings Are Clues: Looking Beyond the Snack
There’s a phrase that popped into my head recently that made me laugh:
“Sometimes your body wants snacks and chaos.”
And honestly... I think we've all had those days.
You know the ones.
You're standing in the kitchen looking for something sweet... even though you just ate. You're wandering from cupboard to cupboard hoping something magically appears. Or maybe you're scrolling your phone while eating chips, wondering why you can't seem to stop.
Most wellness advice tells us one of two things:
Ignore the craving.
Or honor the craving.
But I think there's another option.
Get curious.
Because I don't believe your body is trying to sabotage you. I think it's trying to communicate.
That doesn't mean every craving should be acted on.
If my body tells me it wants an ice cream cone every afternoon for a week, I'm probably not going to decide that's the healthiest choice.
But I am going to ask... Why?
And recently... that's exactly what happened to me.
For a while, I wanted ice cream almost every single day.
At first I laughed it off. Then I paid attention.
I realized something else had quietly changed.
Breakfast? No problem.
Lunch? Somewhere along the way it had become..."Lunch? Psssh... who needs that?"
Dinner wasn't exactly balanced either.
Without realizing it, I had slowly stopped nourishing myself the way I usually do. So was my body asking for ice cream?
Maybe. Or maybe... it was asking for energy.
For nourishment.
For consistency.
The ice cream wasn't the message. It was the clue. And that's true for so many of the symptoms women experience.
Maybe everything suddenly makes you feel bloated.
Maybe you're exhausted by 2:00 in the afternoon.
Maybe you crave sugar constantly.
Maybe you feel like your mood is all over the place.
Those things aren't random. They're information.
Sometimes that information tells us we need more protein.
Sometimes we need more rest.
Sometimes stress has been running the show.
Sometimes our hormones are shifting.
Sometimes it's time to talk with a healthcare provider because something deeper deserves attention.
The point isn't to diagnose yourself. The point is to stop ignoring what your body has been trying to say.
One of the biggest shifts I see in women is when they stop asking: "What's wrong with me?"
...and start asking... "What is my body trying to tell me?"
That single question changes everything. Because healing isn't about becoming perfect.
It's about becoming aware.
It's about noticing patterns.
It's about responding with curiosity instead of criticism.
And maybe... the next time your body asks for snacks and chaos...
you'll smile...
grab a glass of water...
make yourself a nourishing meal...
or maybe even enjoy the ice cream...
without guilt. Because now you're listening beneath the craving instead of judging it.
And that's where real healing begins.
