Movement Snacking: Why Every Little Bit Counts

Movement Snacking: Rethinking Exercise One Small Moment at a Time

Have you ever noticed something funny that you do?

Last night I was getting ready for bed after a shower and I headed to my room, got my pjs all on and decided laying on the floor would  feel really good to pop or stretch my back before getting in bed ...and all of a sudden I thought, "I kinda want to do some glute bridges." LMAO

This ACTUALLY happens to me a lot lol

It isn't  because I had a workout scheduled.

Not because I was trying to burn calories.

My body just randomly wanted to move. lol

So I did what my body wanted. I grabbed a resistance band, did a few glute bridges,  fire hydrants, stretched for a few minutes, and then got into bed and finished my show.

It wasn't a workout.

It was just... movement.

And that's when I started thinking about something I now call movement snacking.

What Is Movement Snacking?

We snack on food throughout the day.

So why can't we "snack" on movement too?

We've somehow been taught that exercise only counts if:

  • You drive to the gym.
  • You wear the right outfit.
  • You sweat for an hour.
  • You check it off your fitness app.

But our bodies don't know the difference between a "real workout" and ten minutes of intentional movement. They simply know they moved.

Movement Can Look Like...

  • Stretching while your coffee brews in the morning.
  • Dancing in your kitchen while making dinner. I do this lol it's divine.
  • Walking around the block after lunch or even around your yard.
  • Doing a few glute exercises before bed.
  • Playing with your kids or grandkids.
  • Pulling weeds in the garden.
  • Carrying bags of mulch across the yard.
  • Parking a little farther away.

It all counts.

The All-or-Nothing Trap

I see this all the time. Women tell me,

"If I don't have an hour, there's no point."

But that's exactly what keeps so many of us stuck.

Life gets busy.

Work runs late.

Dinner needs to be made. blah blah blah

Before you know it, another week has gone by and you feel like you've "failed."

What if instead of asking, "Did I get my workout in?"

You asked, "How can I move my body today?"

That tiny shift changes everything.

Movement Is a Gift, Not a Punishment

As I've gotten older, my relationship with movement has changed.

I'm no longer chasing the hardest workout. CrossFit for instance... no longer feels good.

I'm chasing the feeling of living in a body that feels strong, capable, and energized.

Some days that looks like strength training.

Other days it's a walk.

Sometimes it's a few minutes of stretching in my pajamas before bed.

And you know what?

Those little moments add up.

Not just physically.

Mentally, too.

Every time we choose movement, we're reminding ourselves that taking care of our bodies doesn't have to be all-or-nothing.

Your Challenge This Week

Try a little movement snacking.

Not because you "have to."

But because your body might actually enjoy it.

Take a five-minute walk.

Stretch while watching your favorite show.

Dance to one song in the kitchen.

Do a few squats while dinner cooks.

Find one small way to move.

Then another.

annnnd then another.

Because wellness isn't built in one perfect workout. It's built in the small choices we make over and over again.

And sometimes...those choices happen in pajamas. Cue: 🎶 Ba-na-nas... in Pa-ja-mas! 🎶If you got that reference... congratulations. We're officially at the "night cream and random back pain" stage of life. 😂
